IBIA Reports Drop in Suspicious Betting Alerts in Q2 2023

Share

The second quarter of 2023 saw 50 dubious betting incidents reported by the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) to appropriate authorities, marking a 4% rise from Q1’s revised tally of 48. Despite this minor hike, it’s noteworthy that there’s a considerable 44% drop from the 90 reports lodged during the same quarter of the previous year. The IBIA’s worldwide reach extends across more than 125 sports betting brands, overseeing a staggering $137 billion annual betting turnover, which certifies it as the leading integrity monitor worldwide.

This quarter, the dubious betting incidents involved eight sports, were spread across 18 countries and four continents. Further analysis of Q2’s data reveals:

Soccer triggered the most alerts with 19, an upswing of 27% from the previous quarter’s 15. However, it still signifies a 41% reduction from the 32 cases reported during the same quarter in 2022. The 12 alerts in tennis during Q2 represent an almost 60% decline compared to the revised 29 in Q2 2022. The UK topped the list of countries with the highest number of alerts. It reported nine incidents related to four different sports – darts, football, bowls, and boxing. “The first half of 2023 and Q2 specifically, saw a welcomed 44% drop in suspicious alerts compared to Q2 2022. This substantial decrease is largely due to a collective drive, spearheaded by the International Tennis Integrity Agency, to eliminate match-fixing in tennis,” commented Khalid Ali, CEO of IBIA. He also acknowledged the recent prison sentence issued by a Belgian court as a stern warning to match-fixers.

The Belgian court verdict penalized 28 individuals involved in match-fixing in tennis, including a significant sentence for the gang leader who received five years of imprisonment and an €8,000 fine.

Ali further applauded the ITIA for their relentless pursuit to identify and penalize illicit activities in partnership with key stakeholders. He also praised IBIA’s regulated betting operators for their continuous efforts in aiding the eradication of sports corruption.

The Q2 report detailed the alerts lodged for European sporting events from 2018 to 2022. It also spotlighted the Netherlands, which had reported eight suspicious alerts over the same period. With the Netherlands’ onshore online sports betting market set to surge from €276m in 2022 to €690m by 2028, vigilance for potential offshore irregularities is paramount.

A gender-specific breakdown for the quarter noted two alerts for women’s events, 47 for men’s events, and one mixed gender event. Consequently, IBIA recently launched a pioneering study to scrutinize the scope and attributes of women’s sports betting market and its susceptibility to match-fixing.
