GeoComply’s annual data report reveals significant growth in legal online sports betting activity, marking a 14% year-over-year increase in active accounts. This boost comes despite no new market launches for this year’s Super Bowl.
From 12 am on Saturday, February 8th, to the conclusion of the Super Bowl on Sunday, over 724,400 new accounts were created. This surge is a clear indication of the growing popularity of legal online sports betting across the country, especially with the upcoming launch of Missouri’s legal market, despite no new markets launching this year.
GeoComply’s findings show that active users in states with strict enforcement against illegal operators have seen growth rates “twice as high” compared to states without such action. This shows that regulatory efforts are playing a key role in encouraging legal participation and cutting down on illegal betting activity.
For the third consecutive year, the Super Bowl was played in a state with legal sports betting, this time Louisiana. In New Orleans alone, GeoComply recorded 535,000 geolocation transactions from 60,400 accounts. This was a 150% increase in activity compared to the two weeks leading up to the game.
The most active moment of the game occurred just before halftime when a touchdown pass by Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts led to a spike of 14,300 geolocation transactions per second. The Eagles’ eventual 40-22 victory created a surge in betting activity as fans placed their wagers during pivotal moments of the game.
GeoComply’s report highlights how the intersection of legal markets and high-profile events like the Super Bowl is driving increased participation, pushing the boundaries of sports betting in the U.S.
