In response to claims of possible connections to sports gambling, Fresno State and the NCAA have opened an inquiry into the men’s basketball program. An ESPN story claims that the investigation was sparked by a tip, which resulted in internal reviews and NCAA participation.
Two players have already been suspended as a result of the probe, while another has been kicked off the team. In a statement, Fresno State addressed the matter, confirming that Jalen Weaver and Zaon Collins “were being withheld from competition as the university reviews an eligibility matter.”
Both players have been key contributors, each averaging close to 12 points per game, as per ESPN. Additionally, Mykell Robinson, who averaged 10.3 points, is also under scrutiny. His last appearance on the court was on January 11, and he is no longer listed on the team roster.
This Fresno State investigation is taking place at the same time as a broader sports gambling scam that is presently under federal investigation. According to ESPN, “unusual wagering activity” involving specific college basketball games has also been connected to a gambling ring connected to the NBA’s illegal sports wagering case.
The study claims that this season, accounts connected to the gambling network wagered against teams including Eastern Michigan, Mississippi Valley State, and North Carolina A&T.
In the beginning, the federal inquiry concentrated on NBA betting irregularities, particularly those involving former Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter. Porter’s involvement in a sports betting controversy led to his dismissal from the league. Last spring, the NBA became aware of questionable prop bets associated with Porter.
So far, six individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, which continues to unfold. Meanwhile, Fresno State’s internal review remains ongoing, with further updates expected as the investigation progresses.
