Fox Bet, a joint venture between Flutter Entertainment and Fox Corporation for sports betting, has been sued by the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE). The DGE has filed many complaints against Fox Bet, alleging that the website is in violation of the state of New Jersey’s ban on gambling on college teams that play there.
These violations began with the NCAA basketball game between Northwestern University and Rutgers University of New Jersey on February 13, 2021. In November of the same year, the DGE discovered betting markets for a different game featuring Monmouth University.
Later, Fox Bet acknowledged two further violations involving contests starring Fairleigh Dickinson and Seton Hall University that took place in December 2021 and January 2022, respectively.
David Rebuck, the executive director of the DGE, stated that these infractions are in violation of the New Jersey Casino Control Act. In order to end the dispute, Fox Bet was mandated to pay a $80,000 fine.
In light of recent reports that Fox Bet is ceasing operations, this regulatory fine has been announced. The website stopped taking bets in New Jersey at the end of July, and it will shut down completely on August 31.
The combination of governmental scrutiny and adjustments to operational strategy demonstrates how the New Jersey sports betting market is changing. Operators like Fox Bet are required to comply with regulatory requirements in addition to adapting to shifting customer preferences and market dynamics as legislative frameworks and market dynamics continue to change.
