Federal Investigation into NBA Betting Scandal Expands to College Basketball

Share

The ongoing federal investigation into illegal sports betting linked to the NBA has reportedly extended to college basketball. Sources told ESPN that betting accounts tied to the gambling ring placed wagers against North Carolina A&T, Mississippi Valley State, and Eastern Michigan this season.

Authorities have already arrested six individuals for their alleged involvement in the scandal, which includes former NBA player Jontay Porter. Before being dismissed, Porter played center for the Toronto Raptors. The NBA launched an inquiry last spring after noticing irregular prop bets related to his performance.

Porter’s Betting Patterns and DraftKings Alerts

DraftKings flagged suspicious betting activity involving Porter in two separate games. On January 26, the platform reported that “users betting the under on Porter three-pointers were the biggest moneymakers among all NBA player prop betting that day.” Similar patterns emerged on March 20, when bettors again profited significantly.

Porter exited both games early. On January 26, he played only four minutes and attempted no three-pointers. On March 20, he left the game after just three minutes due to illness and failed to score. Typically, he averaged nearly 14 minutes per game.

Integrity Compliance 360, a sports betting monitoring firm, sent an alert regarding a bettor attempting their “largest wager to date” on Central Michigan covering the first-half spread against Eastern Michigan. Investigations also uncovered two additional high-stakes wagers on the same bet from separate accounts in a different jurisdiction.

A spokesperson from Central Michigan University acknowledged the issue, stating, “We became aware of the matter on Wednesday and a review is underway. At this time, we do not know anything further about what may have precipitated the suspicious activity. We are working with the Mid-American Conference and will provide further details as we learn additional information.”

The NCAA reaffirmed its commitment to integrity, stating in a media release that it “takes sports betting very seriously” and collaborates with monitoring services. However, due to confidentiality rules, the association declined to comment on ongoing or potential investigations.
