FanDuel and a commercial affiliate of the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) have resolved their ongoing legal dispute. The lawsuit stemmed from allegations that FanDuel had “unauthorized use of the names and images of MLB players on its sports betting platform.”
The settlement includes a “voluntary dismissal of the lawsuit with prejudice,” meaning the case cannot be refiled. Both parties will bear their own legal fees and costs, as stated in the agreement. While the MLBPA acknowledged the settlement, it refrained from further comments on the matter.
This resolution allows FanDuel to move forward without lingering legal distractions from one of its key sports partners.
While the MLBPA case concludes, FanDuel now confronts another legal challenge. Amit Patel, a former Jacksonville Jaguars employee, has filed a lawsuit against the sportsbook. Patel alleges that FanDuel “exploited his gambling addiction and intentionally ignored its responsible gaming and anti-money laundering protocols.” He seeks $250 million in damages.
Currently serving time in Williamsburg federal prison, Patel claims the company incentivized his continued gambling through fantasy sports promotions. His lawsuit states that FanDuel’s VIP host, Brett Krause, contacted him excessively—up to 100 times daily between 2021 and 2023—to encourage further betting. Patel alleges that these interactions occurred even on days he refrained from gambling.
Patel’s attorney, Matthew Litt, stated, “Defendants actively and intentionally targeted and preyed on Plaintiff with incentives, credits, and gifts to create, nurture, expedite, and/or exacerbate his addiction with the only possible outcome that he would ultimately hit rock bottom.”
These cases shed light on the growing scrutiny sports betting platforms face regarding player protections and compliance. FanDuel’s resolution with the MLBPA offers some relief, but Patel’s lawsuit highlights concerns about responsible gaming practices.
As the sports betting industry continues to grow, operators like FanDuel may encounter increased legal and regulatory pressures.
