A well-known Brazilian footballer has been charged by the Football Association (FA) for suspected misbehavior during many Premier League games from November 2022 to August 2023.
Paqueta, the player in question, is charged with intentionally requesting yellow cards from officials in an effort to rig match results. According to the FA, the purpose of this action was to manipulate betting markets in order to profit financially.
West Ham player Paqueta has angrily rejected any wrongdoing. He acknowledged his cooperation with the FA’s investigation over the previous nine months and expressed astonishment and dismay at the allegations in a statement that was posted on his Instagram page.
The FA’s inquiry into Paqueta’s conduct reportedly stemmed from irregular betting activities surrounding a match against Bournemouth in the 2023-24 season opener. Paqueta willingly provided the FA with access to his phone during the investigation process.
This isn’t the first instance of a Premier League player facing disciplinary action for betting-related infractions. Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali was recently handed a 10-month global ban for similar violations while he was with AC Milan. Tonali subsequently received a two-month suspended ban upon his transfer to Newcastle.
In a separate incident, Brentford’s Ivan Toney served an eight-month ban earlier this year for breaching FA betting regulations.
