ESPN Bet Adds Injury Insurance for NFL Wagers

Share

Sportsbooks are racing to protect customers from the frustration of losing a bet due to an untimely injury. ESPN Bet has now rolled out its own version of injury insurance, joining FanDuel and DraftKings in reshaping how NFL wagers are handled when players go down mid-game. With the new football season kicking off September 4, the timing is no accident.

Good to Know

  • ESPN Bet will refund eligible straight bets as bonus bets if they lose solely because of an injury.
  • In parlays or teasers, only the injured player’s leg will be removed, and odds will be recalculated.
  • FanDuel and DraftKings have both launched similar protections in the days leading up to the NFL season.

ESPN Bet’s injury insurance gives users a safety net when injuries derail a bet. According to the sportsbook’s terms, if a single pre-game straight bet is lost due to an injury deemed eligible, the full stake will be returned as bonus bets.

The protection doesn’t stop at single wagers. If the injured player is part of a parlay, Same Game Parlay, or teaser, the bet doesn’t collapse. Instead, ESPN Bet recalculates the odds, removing the injured leg while leaving the rest of the wager active. That adjustment keeps the parlay alive, a move likely to appeal to NFL bettors who rely heavily on multi-leg wagers.

The competition around injury protection has heated up quickly. FanDuel launched its own policy on September 2, promising to return bonus bets within 24 hours if a wager is lost because a player is injured in the first quarter. DraftKings followed with its Early Exit program, which credits bettors with the cash value of their stake if an injury affects the result.

Injury insurance and early exit features speak to a broader push by operators to create a friendlier betting environment ahead of one of the busiest seasons of the year. Sportsbooks know the NFL dominates betting volume, and ensuring customers don’t feel punished by unpredictable injuries could make a difference in where bettors choose to place their money.
