Denmark’s Retail Betting Landscape Altered by New ID Regulations

Share

Denmark’s betting environment has changed significantly, with a significant drop in retail betting when strict identity regulations were put into place. The goal of the program, which went into effect on October 1, 2023, was to address player protection issues and concerns about unethical betting activities.

The new rules require anybody wishing to wager at kiosks or betting shops to have a Player ID that was provided by the operators of those establishments. By establishing a link between the Player ID and the user’s betting account, this calculated action greatly reduces the possibility of underage gaming and fortifies security against money laundering and other illegal actions.

In addition, the implementation of the Player ID system adopts a proactive approach by excluding anyone listed in the self-exclusion registry from taking part in retail gambling. The extra layer upholds the principles of ethical gaming.

Decline in Land-Based Betting, Surge in Online Casinos

Data made public by Spillemyndigheden, the Danish Gambling Authority, shows a notable change in betting behavior following the passage of the ID regulations. The distribution of bets was fairly consistent before these modifications, with land-based facilities accounting for 17%, internet casinos for 23%, and mobile betting for about 60%.

But with the implementation of the ID rules, land-based betting saw a precipitous drop to just 8%, accompanied by a significant 17% drop in Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) in October, totaling $26.2 million (€24 million) less than the same month the year before.

On the other hand, revenue in the online casino industry increased by 8% and reached $275.1 million (€251 million) in November. This change indicates a notable shift in the betting market from brick-and-mortar to virtual venues.

Spillemyndigheden advises caution when making firm conclusions on the direct causal relationship between the implementation of the Player ID system and the decrease in land-based betting in light of these tendencies that have been seen. Although there was a decrease in expenditure on land-based betting in the first two months following implementation, the authorities stress that further analysis is required before drawing any firm conclusions.
