Delaware Explores Sports Betting Expansion, Takes Cues from Neighboring States

Share

Delaware is considering extending its sports betting operations in order to compete with neighbouring states. The Internet Sports Lottery Legislative Working Group recently met to explore the state’s prospective inclusion of mobile sports betting.

To aid in decision-making, the company is researching mobile sports betting frameworks in neighbouring states. The goal of this analysis is to provide an appropriate model for Delaware’s expansion aspirations.

Representatives from the Sports Betting Alliance, a coalition of legal sports betting platforms, and GeoComply, a geolocation business specialising in sports betting compliance, shared their perspectives at the conference.

According to Jon Mandel of the Sports Betting Alliance, the introduction of mobile betting has had no negative influence on Washington DC’s retail gaming outlets, which are similar to Delaware’s existing sports betting arrangement.

“Retail operations have continued to grow notwithstanding that there is a district-wide mobile app, there is private sports books run at the different professional sports stadiums, and Maryland and Virginia – which are right literally next door – have multiple mobile sports wager apps,” said Mandel.

Mandel emphasised the benefits of mobile sports betting, including the ability to reduce the illegal gambling market, provide responsible gaming tools and consumer protections, and create additional state tax revenue.

According to GeoComply’s John Pappas, a large number of Delaware residents attempted to use sports mobile betting applications during the previous football season but were unable to place bets.

“During the NFL season – so this is from September 8 through the Super Bowl – we saw 4.15 million geolocation transactions within the state of Delaware. It’s a small state, there’s only a million people here,” said Pappas.

Over 112,000 sports betting accounts were used in these attempts. Notably, 11,424 people crossed state lines to gamble, with 234 doing so expressly over the Super Bowl weekend.

Delaware’s interest in expanding sports betting illustrates the state’s willingness to adapt and respond to changing market trends. Delaware hopes to make informed decisions about the prospective introduction of mobile sports betting by analysing neighbouring states’ experiences and insights from industry experts.
