Impressive numbers for sports betting in July were released by the District of Columbia, indicating a notable rise in activity. The month’s total handle came to over $27.3 million, indicating a rise in both wins and participation.
Sports bettors in Washington, DC, saw strong returns in July, with winnings totaling about $22 million. A portion of this noteworthy rise might be ascribed to recent changes in the sports betting environment in the city.
Thanks to its arrangement with the DC Lottery, FanDuel was the only supplier of mobile sports betting in DC until mid-July. But with the recent adoption of the municipal council’s budget, more operators were able to enter the market, leading to considerable changes.
Following this approval, several major sports betting operators set up shop in DC by mid-month, contributing to a dramatic boost in betting activity. Compared to July 2023, last month’s handle skyrocketed by over 250%, highlighting the growing popularity of sports betting in the region.
The entry of new players such as DraftKings, BetMGM, and Caesars into the DC market further fueled this growth. BetMGM, for instance, launched its operations on July 15 and marked the occasion with a citywide event at its Nats Park sportsbook. The addition of these operators diversified the options for bettors and drove up overall handle figures.
For the month of July, DC’s sportsbooks collectively generated nearly $3.9 million in revenue. FanDuel led the pack with a $10.2 million handle, while BetMGM and DraftKings followed with $3.3 million and $1.2 million, respectively.
The surge in activity in DC’s sports betting market comes in the wake of the Supreme Court’s 2018 decision to overturn PASPA, which had previously restricted legal sports betting. Since then, more than 35 states have established regulated sports betting markets, and DC is clearly experiencing the benefits of this expanded landscape.
