CSMAS Opens Discussion on College Athletics and Sports Betting

CSMAS underscored that blanket prohibitions often fall short of curbing problematic gambling behaviors, noting, “there is little evidence to suggest that current prohibitions have effectively prevented student-athlete gambling.”

Furthermore, initial feedback from CSMAS pointed toward harm-reduction strategies. The committee emphasized the need for universities to establish mechanisms to prevent, identify, and treat student-athletes who may develop gambling issues. This includes creating clear referral pathways to support services for those at risk.
