The recent tumult that enveloped the collegiate baseball landscape had the University of Cincinnati’s baseball program in the spotlight. However, after a thorough inquiry, the team has now been declared innocent of any dubious involvement.
Earlier this year, whispers of a betting scandal connected to collegiate baseball started gaining traction. The heart of the controversy revolved around two secondary/Level III violations related to sports betting. This led to a deep dive into the actions of former assistant coach Kyle Sprague, and Andy Nagel, the director of operations. Both were dismissed on May 17 after suspicions arose regarding their connections with Bert Neff from Mooresville, Indiana.
Neff, not just an ordinary fan but the father of a former Cincinnati baseball player, became a person of interest when he placed questionable bets on a baseball game between Alabama and LSU at the local BetMGM Sportsbook. Further probing revealed his collaboration with Brad Bohannon, Alabama’s then-coach. This coordination resulted in Bohannon’s unceremonious exit and a ban on betting for Crimson Tide games in several states.
Interestingly, while the links between Sprague, Nagel, and Neff were undeniable, the final results of the investigation brought relief to Cincinnati’s baseball community. The university proudly announced that there wasn’t a shred of evidence implicating any current or past players, coaches, or staff in betting either on Cincinnati games or any collegiate baseball matches.
The tremors of the scandal didn’t spare the team’s top brass. Head coach Scott Googins, after delivering a 24-33 scorecard for the 2023 season, decided it was time for a change and stepped down in June. Recognizing the urgency, the university roped in Jordan Bischel from Central Michigan to take over the reins. As Bischel inked a six-year deal, he voiced his unwavering dedication to guiding the Bearcats into the Big 12 conference.
The entire ordeal, triggered by the suspicious bets on the Alabama-LSU match and Neff’s role in it, has been a test for Cincinnati’s baseball team. Nevertheless, with the shadows of the past slowly fading, the University of Cincinnati, alongside its revamped coaching crew, has its eyes set on the forthcoming season and a renewed passion for the sport.
