The Kansas City Chiefs have thrown their support behind the efforts to legalize sports betting in Missouri. A new initiative aims to place the issue on the November ballot, allowing voters to decide.
Chiefs President Mark Donovan highlighted the role of the St. Louis Cardinals in leading the push for legalization. He expressed the Chiefs’ commitment to the cause during a news conference as the team prepared for training camp. “I’ve spent more time in Jefferson City on that issue than any other,” Donovan said. “We believe it’s the right thing for the state, fans, and sports. It’s proven successful in nearly every state surrounding Missouri, so we support it fully.”
Missouri remains one of about a dozen states yet to legalize sports betting. The proposed voter initiative would legalize online betting and authorize an additional casino at the Lake of the Ozarks.
A coalition of teams, including the Cardinals, Chiefs, Blues, and Royals, submitted the petition in May. They needed approximately 171,000 valid signatures to place the issue on the ballot. The backers exceeded this, gathering 340,000 signatures for the sports betting proposal and 320,000 for the casino plan. This petition drive follows several failed attempts at legalization in the state legislature over recent years.
The secretary of state’s office now has three weeks to process the petitions. County clerks are responsible for verifying the signatures.
