Bovada Expands Restricted Market List as States Crack Down

Share

The offshore gaming operator Bovada has expanded its list of prohibited markets to include three additional states: Kansas, Louisiana, and Pennsylvania. This action is part of a larger pattern where governments in the United governments are actively attempting to restrict Bovada’s activities within their borders.

Bovada’s access restrictions in certain states are consistent with previous practices. Bovada receives cease-and-desist letters from state gaming agencies, but the operator hardly ever responds. As a result, these states frequently find themselves abruptly added to Bovada’s prohibited list.

In Kansas, James Bain of the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission (KRGC) confirmed the commission sent a cease-and-desist notice on July 8. Despite confirmation of delivery on August 20, Bovada never officially acknowledged the notice. “Our main goal is to make sure the betting public in Kansas is protected and playing on licensed, regulated and taxed sites,” said Randy Evans of the KRGC.

Similarly, Louisiana’s Gaming Control Board issued a cease-and-desist notice to Bovada on August 6. Chairman Christopher B. Hebert criticized Bovada for allowing Louisiana residents to engage in online gambling without proper authorization. “Bovada is allowing Louisiana residents and/or persons located in the state of Louisiana to place wagers… in violation of Louisiana gaming laws and regulations,” Hebert stated.

In Pennsylvania, the Gaming Control Board sent a notice to Bovada in late August but did not provide further details.

Bovada’s Diminishing U.S. Presence

With these latest additions, Bovada now restricts access in 13 states and Washington, D.C. The operator’s restricted list includes:

  • Nevada
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Maryland
  • Delaware
  • Michigan
  • Colorado
  • West Virginia
  • Connecticut
  • Washington, D.C.
  • Ohio
  • Louisiana
  • Kansas
  • Pennsylvania

Bovada’s challenges with state regulators have intensified. Recently, the company added Ohio, Washington, D.C., and Connecticut to its restricted list, reflecting ongoing regulatory pressure.
