Renowned sports betting expert Billy Walters has voiced strong criticisms of the US wagering industry, highlighting key areas needing improvement. Speaking at the National Council of Legislators from Gaming States (NCLGS), Walters expressed concerns over the industry’s approach to regulation and its overall transparency.
Walters criticized the industry’s reluctance to involve experienced bettors in regulatory and legislative matters. He argued that the current market dynamics are dominated by a few entities, which undermines transparency and fairness. “The industry is unwilling to cooperate with people who actually possess an intimate knowledge of the betting sector and involve them in important regulatory and legislative discussions,” Walters stated.
Moreover, Walters expressed frustration over the practice of sportsbooks restricting successful bettors to safeguard their profits. He described this practice as unfair and called on state regulators to address it. Walters also questioned the role of European operators in the US market, suggesting they lack a deep understanding of the local betting landscape. However, he did commend the British market for its lack of taxes on winnings.
Walters is championing his vision for a fairer betting market through the American Bettors’ Voice, an organization he co-founded with prominent bettor Gadoon “Spanky” Kyrollos. This nonprofit aims to represent the interests of bettors in regulated markets and push for more involvement in regulatory discussions.
American Bettors’ Voice seeks to enhance sector fairness, transparency, and customer focus. It plans to address several critical issues, including withdrawal times, dispute resolutions, and the transparency of gambling companies’ lobbying activities. Walters hopes this initiative will bring meaningful change to the industry.
Walters, known for his extensive experience in betting, has been a prominent figure in advocating for a better regulatory framework. Despite past legal issues, including accusations of insider trading, Walters continues to influence the industry, hoping to drive improvements in how sports betting is regulated and operated.
