BHA’s Betting-Focused Strategy for 2024 Racing Season

With a focus on improving the betting experience, the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has released a detailed strategy for the 2024 racing season. These adjustments are the initial part of a long-term industry plan, and a two-year trial period will follow. In order to demonstrate its support, the Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) has contributed an extra £3.8 million (€4.4 million/$4.7 million) in funds.

Enhancing Saturday Betting Performance

Spreading out the fixtures throughout the day is one of the main goals in order to enhance the performance of Saturday tournaments. The BHA intends to have 32 Saturdays with just three games scheduled between the hours of 2 and 4 p.m. during the protected window. While the following 19 Saturdays will include four events in the same window, the goal is to surpass prior Saturdays by 6% to 7% in terms of overall betting turnover. This tactical change is based on a review of past betting statistics, which suggests that a schedule that is more evenly dispersed will increase betting activity all day long.

The BHA’s Chief Operating Officer, Richard Wayman, stressed the importance of this modification and said it will improve Saturday wagering in general.

Introducing Sunday Evening Betting Sessions

The second goal is to start a new betting event every Sunday night. The BHA wants to go better than its existing midweek floodlit matches, which take place on Tuesday and Thursday. A 15%–20% increase in turnover is the aim. The shift in digital betting consumers’ behavior, which suggests a preference for Sunday nights over midweek evenings, supports the choice to concentrate on Sunday evenings.

The overarching goal of mitigating the fall in wagering on British races is in keeping with these betting-related objectives. The BHA intends to introduce additional Premier Fixtures, which have typically performed 1% to 2% better than other fixtures, in order to accomplish this. The BHA wants to increase competitiveness throughout the fixture schedule, introduce Sunday nights, expand Sunday events, and improve the dispersion of Saturday matches.

According to Richard Wayman, the Premier Fixtures emphasis is anticipated to pay off because there is a noticeable increase in turnover on these racedays when compared to the remaining fixture list.

British racing may benefit monetarily from these suggested modifications if the BHA approves them in time for the 2024 season. If the existing fixture calendar is maintained, these adjustments are projected to boost racing’s profitability by almost £90 million over a five-year period. Even while not every reform will show benefits right away, the BHA is dedicated to regular reviews and open communication about how things are doing.

With a heavy emphasis on betting and improving the whole experience for racing aficionados, the 2024 racing season looks to be a pivotal time for British horse racing. The strategic strategy of the BHA is to guarantee a better future for the sport and to rejuvenate the sector.
