Betting shops in England and Wales have opened yesterday for the first this year as part of the latest easing of Covid-19 restrictions in the United Kingdom. However, it will not will be ‘business as usual’ yet.

Betting shops will still have to adhere to various measures, for example the number of customers allowed inside at any one time would being capped at eight, depending on the size of the shop. Furthermore, there will be a limit on the maximum time that customers can spend inside. There will be no chairs, no live sports being displayed and a maximum of two gaming machines in operation. Customers will also be limited to a maximum of two visits per day, with shops forced to close at 8 pm. The measures are aimed at keeping customer visits short and strictly ‘business’; “place your bets and go home”, basically.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson commented on this next phase of the UK’s strategy for reopening:

“I’m sure it will be a huge relief for those business owners who have been closed for so long, and for everyone else it’s a chance to get back to doing some of the things we love and have missed.”

Johnson added:
