Leading iGaming and sports betting operator bet365 has been hit with a $33,000 fine in New Jersey. The penalty follows accusations that the company accepted wagers on already concluded events, violating state regulations. Bet365 operates in partnership with the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City.
The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) discovered that bet365 had mistakenly listed a replay of a mixed martial arts event as a live match on its platform. The original fight had occurred a week earlier. Furthermore, bet365 was accused of accepting illegal bets on prohibited events between February 2022 and January 2023.
Mary Jo Flaherty, interim director of the DGE, noted that the issue was quickly addressed by the operator. “The regulator agreed to settle the violations with bet365 thanks to the operator’s immediate remedial action,” she explained. The fine will be directed to the DGE’s Revenue Unit.
This isn’t bet365’s first regulatory issue in New Jersey. Just a month earlier, the company faced a $519,000 payout to players after unilaterally revising odds without prior approval from the DGE. The incident occurred between 2020 and 2022 when incorrect odds provided by partners led bet365 to adjust its offerings.
At the time, Flaherty emphasized the seriousness of the situation, noting, “These failures are problematic as to bet365’s business ability to conduct online gaming and the integrity and reliability of its operational systems.” Despite this, the DGE allowed the odds revision but criticized the company for not consulting regulators first.
