Sports fans in Illinois are seeing changes to their betting slips once again, with bet365 confirming it will add a 25-cent fee to smaller wagers. The adjustment follows the state’s revised sports betting tax law, which took effect in July.
Good to know
In a message to customers, bet365 explained that the extra charge is a direct response to the Illinois General Assembly’s updated Sports Wagering Act. The surcharge appears on the bet slip at the time of placement.
The operator clarified how the rule works: parlays and round robins count as a single bet, but multiple straight bets on the same slip are taxed individually if they fall below $10.
Bets worth $10 or more won’t be subject to the fee. The measure helps operators offset Illinois’ per-wager tax, which charges 25 cents on the first 20 million bets and then doubles to 50 cents afterward.
While bet365 was the last sportsbook in the state to add a new fee, others already adapted. FanDuel and DraftKings rolled out 50-cent charges per wager earlier in the week. Caesars and Fanatics Sportsbook also implemented 25-cent surcharges.
Some operators took a different path. BetMGM, Circa Sports, Hard Rock Bet, BetRivers, and ESPN BET chose to set new minimum bet thresholds instead of adding per-wager charges, showing that Illinois sportsbooks are testing different ways to handle the state’s tax structure.
