The Colorado Division of Gaming has released its sports wagering report for June, showcasing impressive growth in revenue. The state saw gross gaming revenue (GGR) skyrocket to $28.2 million, a dramatic rise from $9.2 million in June 2023. This robust increase highlights the expanding popularity of sports betting in Colorado.
Total handle for June reached $350.4 million, marking a 12.8% increase compared to the same month last year. However, this figure reflects a 21.7% decrease from May 2024. This drop is likely due to the sports off-season, with major American sports leagues on hiatus until the Fall.
In June, American football’s handle was notably low, just under $1.5 million, accounting for less than 0.5% of the total handle. Similarly, ice hockey contributed only 2.3% of the handle, with $8.1 million in bets placed. The Stanley Cup Finals, which extended into June, likely drove the majority of this wagering activity.
Conversely, baseball and basketball emerged as the dominant sports for betting. Baseball generated $104.5 million in handle, representing nearly 30% of the total for June. This substantial figure is attributed to the ongoing MLB season. Basketball also performed strongly, with over $59.2 million in handle. Soccer and tennis followed, with $27.7 million and $26.5 million respectively. Together, these three sports contributed just over 30% of the total handle, slightly surpassing baseball’s individual contribution.
Retail sports betting in Colorado brought in $111.2 thousand in GGR for June. In contrast, online betting was significantly more lucrative, generating $28.1 million. This underscores the growing trend of online sports wagering, which continues to dominate the market.
For the fiscal year to date, Colorado has reported total wagers amounting to $6.01 billion, reflecting a 16.2% increase from the previous year. This data illustrates the state’s continued expansion and increasing engagement in the sports betting sector.
