ASA Upholds Complaint Against Ladbrokes Ad Featuring Influencer Jake Paul

Share

Influencer Jake Paul following his boxing battle with English professional boxer Tommy Fury was featured in a Ladbrokes advertisement from February 2023, which was distributed as a sponsored tweet. However, because to worries over Paul’s appeal to minors, this advertisement has gotten Ladbrokes into trouble with the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

Ladbrokes’ Defense and ASA’s Verdict

Ladbrokes first defended the advertisement, saying it lacked any calls to action, marketing offers, or links to the Ladbrokes website. The business emphasized the age-gate system it had put in place on its feed, making sure that readers could only see the advertisement if Twitter had confirmed they were over 18. Furthermore, according to the CAP standards, boxing is not categorized as a moderate or high-risk activity, according to Ladbrokes.

Nevertheless, the ASA upheld the complaint against the advertisement notwithstanding these defenses. Jake Paul has a sizable social media following, with almost 65 million followers spread across a variety of sites, according to the ASA. 3 million of these followers, according to alarming statistics, were under the age of 18 on each website.

The ASA also expressed worry on Paul’s prior participation in the children’s television series “Bizaardvark” from 2016 to 2018. The ASA came to the conclusion that the program was likely to appeal strongly to viewers under the age of 18 given its target demographic, which includes those under 18. They decided to sustain the complaint against the Ladbrokes advertisement as a result of this as well.

Previous Ladbrokes Ad Incident

It’s interesting to note that the ASA has already taken action against a Ladbrokes advertisement. A complaint against the betting and gaming operator for an advertisement that appeared in their “Where the Nation Plays” campaign in April 2021 was upheld by the self-regulatory authority back in July 2021.

In the prior instance, the advertisement showed three guys betting on a football game using the Ladbrokes app and their responses to the game. This advertisement was rated socially irresponsible by the ASA and likely to promote problem gambling.
