Aryna Sabalenka has claimed her third Grand Slam title by winning the US Open, solidifying her status as one of the top-ranked tennis players. This marks her fourth consecutive year reaching the final, showcasing her consistent dominance on the court.
While her triumph in the tournament is impressive, Sabalenka grabbed attention during a press conference after defeating Chinese rival Qinwen Zheng. Ahead of the final match against Jessica Pegula, she revealed an interesting aspect of her training—losing thousands of dollars in practice matches. However, this wasn’t due to gambling urges but rather a motivational tactic from her coach.
To boost her performance, Sabalenka’s coach regularly wagers money on her practice games, pushing her to compete harder. “Well, my coach put the money on the table when we play set or match with my hitting partner. Usually, it’s quite a decent amount of money. The money from your coach is the sweetest money, you know,” Sabalenka shared.
Losing a practice game could cost her thousands, but Sabalenka doesn’t mind the extra pressure. In fact, she sees it as a driving force. She once lost $5,000 but later won the same amount, proving her resilience.
While Sabalenka embraces this high-stakes environment during training, she also highlights the importance of completely disconnecting from tennis off the court. After intense practice sessions and tournaments, she takes time to “switch off,” allowing herself to recover mentally.
This combination of focused practice and relaxation has clearly paid off. With her third Grand Slam victory secured, Sabalenka remains the world’s #2 player, standing ahead of Coco Gauff and just behind Iga Swiatek.
