The Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) has announced it will begin accepting applications for event wagering licenses next month. This marks a significant step in expanding the state’s sports betting landscape.
Starting July 8, the ADG will accept applications for at least one event wagering license reserved for Arizona Tribes and at least one for Arizona Sports Franchises. This initiative aligns with existing state laws and aims to diversify the sports betting market.
Applicants must submit their paperwork by July 19, as only those received before the deadline will be considered. The ADG has made guidelines and resources available on its website to assist with the application process. In a statement, the ADG emphasized, “ADG will thoroughly evaluate all applications received based on the established criteria pursuant to the State’s event wagering rules and statutes. Interested parties are encouraged to visit ADG’s website for detailed information on eligibility requirements, application procedures, and relevant timelines.”
Arizona has allowed legal sports betting outside of Tribal gaming for over three years. The state legalized sports wagers in April 2021 after Governor Doug Ducey signed the bill into law. The sports wagering market officially launched in September 2021, with the ADG serving as the regulatory authority.
Under Arizona state law, the ADG can issue up to 20 licenses to operators, equally divided between Tribes and sports teams. This balanced approach ensures a wide representation and fair competition in the market.
Since the US Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) in May 2018, more than 35 states have legalized and regulated sports betting. This landmark decision, also known as the Bradley Act, has significantly transformed the sports betting industry across the nation.
Arizona’s proactive steps to expand its sports betting framework reflect a broader trend towards embracing regulated gambling. As the state prepares to issue new licenses, it continues to position itself as a competitive player in the rapidly evolving sports wagering market.
