Sam “SBF” Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of FTX, has spoken out from behind bars about his financial donations and political views during the 2020 U.S. elections. He outlined his reasons for contributing to the Democratic Party in an interview with The New York Sun, pointing to reservations about the party’s ideological stance.
Bankman-Fried revealed that he supported Democrats in 2020 to prevent the party from “becoming the party of Bernie Sanders,” referring to the Vermont senator known for his socialist policies. However, over time, his views shifted.
“I would say that I viewed myself at the time as sort of center-left. And that is not how I feel myself anymore. It is not how I came to view myself by 2022,” SBF stated.
He expressed deep dissatisfaction with the current administration, stating, “The Biden administration was just incredibly destructive and difficult to work with, and frankly, the Republican Party was far more reasonable.”
Before FTX’s collapse, SBF reportedly contributed around $40 million to political candidates and PACs, aiming to shape U.S. crypto policies. His parents, Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried, are now requesting a presidential pardon from Donald Trump while he is serving a 25-year term for his part in the demise of FTX.
Clemency prospects are still unclear, though, as legal experts question Trump’s readiness to step in. Despite his political shift, SBF’s legal troubles continue to overshadow any potential political influence he once had.
