Sam Bankman-Fried’s parents are reportedly working to secure a pardon for their son, reaching out to individuals connected to former U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to Bloomberg, Stanford Law School professors Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried have recently met with lawyers and others believed to have influence with Trump. Their discussions focused on the possibility of clemency for their son, who is serving a 25-year sentence after being convicted on charges related to the collapse of FTX, the crypto exchange he co-founded in 2019.
Trump, since returning to office in January, has granted clemency to over 1,500 individuals facing criminal charges or convictions. His approach to crypto policy has also drawn attention, particularly after he pardoned Ross Ulbricht, the founder of Silk Road, who has received strong backing from the crypto community and libertarians.
Bankman-Fried has not gained the same level of public support as Ulbricht, but his legal team has argued that his sentence of 25 years is excessive. They point to the fact that FTX customers have largely recovered the funds they initially lost.
Former FTX executive Ryan Salame, sentenced to more than seven years, is also reportedly seeking a pardon.
