Russia's largest lender, Sberbank, is gearing up to offer digital ruble transactions to its customers starting in early 2025. This move marks a significant step in the country’s adoption of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), following the digital ruble's development and testing by the Bank of Russia. Sberbank Joins CBDC Expansion Sberbank, along with about 20 other financial institutions, is set to participate in the second round of testing for the digital ruble. Speaking to Reuters, Sberbank's deputy chief executive, Anatoly Popov, shared the bank's timeline, stating that they plan to begin "actual operations with customers in early 2025." This initiative is part of a broader effort by Russia to integrate digital currency into its financial system, with Sberbank playing a pivotal role. The digital ruble prototype, developed by the Bank of Russia in December 2021, entered its testing phase in 2022. By August 2023, pilot transactions had been conducted by clients and employees from 13 Russian banks. The central bank further expanded the pilot in September 2024 to include up to 9,000 individuals and 1,200 companies, significantly increasing the scope from the initial 600 individuals and 22 companies. The Bank of Russia aims to make the digital ruble widely available by July 2025, emphasizing that this digital currency will complement, not replace, existing cash and non-cash rubles. This timeline aligns with global trends, as countries like China have already begun using their own CBDC, the digital yuan, in various applications, including paying state salaries. The introduction of the digital ruble is part of a broader strategy to modernize Russia's financial system and provide a state-controlled alternative to existing payment methods. As Sberbank prepares to offer this service, the move underscores Russia's commitment to staying at the forefront of digital currency innovation.
