Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, recently shared his strategic vision for the evolution of the world’s second-largest blockchain. In a new blog post titled “The Three Transitions,” Buterin emphasised the significance of layer 2 scaling, wallet security, and privacy for Ethereum’s growth trajectory.
Buterin advocated for a simultaneous and coordinated approach towards these three core transitions, underscoring the importance of preserving essential protocol components. He stressed the goal of offering an unobstructed and globally accessible user experience.
“The intensity of coordination required to efficiently address these three crucial transitions is undoubtedly high,” Buterin pointed out in his post.
According to Buterin, layer 2 scaling is imperative for Ethereum’s survival. He believes that failing to achieve this could drive products aimed at mass markets to abandon the chain and resort to centralized solutions.
Ethereum’s ecosystem has recently experienced a surge in the number of layer 2 networks. This includes the release of ZK rollups by Polygon and Matter Labs.
Furthermore, Ethereum plans to roll out a significant upgrade named Dencun later this year. This upgrade will incorporate a feature known as proto-danksharding designed to reduce the cost of rollups.
The transition towards smart contract wallets is vital for wallet security, according to Buterin. This shift is crucial to make users feel at ease with storing their cryptocurrency payments and data on-chain, without resorting to centralized platforms.
Buterin also sees privacy as a critical factor for Ethereum’s success. He warns that without sufficient privacy measures, all user activities on-chain will be publicly visible, leading to potential Ethereum’s failure.
Buterin concluded, “It’s not just about enhancing protocol features; in some cases, a profound change in our interaction with Ethereum, involving significant adaptations from applications and wallets, is necessary.”
