US Department of Justice Expands Crypto Crime Team to Combat Ransomware

The US Department of Justice (DoJ) has announced a considerable increase of its crypto crime squad as part of its commitment to bolster operations against crimes connected to cryptocurrencies. In order to investigate and prosecute bitcoin misuse, the National bitcoin Enforcement Team (NCET) will team up with the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section (CCIPS).

Nicole Argentieri, principal deputy assistant attorney general, stressed the NCET’s performance as a “startup” unit while highlighting the need for more resources to address the growing threats presented by cyber criminals. The NCET is anticipated to gain fresh energy and more personnel as a result of the merging with the bigger CCIPS, enabling it to efficiently handle challenging crypto situations.

Introducing the New Leadership and Mission

The NCET will experience a shift in leadership as a result of the expansion, with Claudia Quiroz taking over as the new leader of the organization. Since NCET’s creation, Quiroz, a former assistant US attorney in the Northern District of California, has served as the organization’s deputy director. She will be a tremendous help in running the new “super-charged” unit thanks to her experience and knowledge.

The reorganized team’s main goal will be to stop ransomware-related crimes. The NCET will concentrate on finding offenders using their cryptocurrency payments as a result of the rise in ransomware assaults that target vital infrastructure and companies. The team wants to undermine the financial incentives that drive hackers by acting quickly to block or confiscate these assets before they reach ransomware hotspots.
