Tech Giants Team Up to Build an Interoperable Metaverse Infrastructure

Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, Unity, Sony, and 30-othe tech companies have agreed to come together to build the infrastructure for an interoperable metaverse.

Despite best efforts of the crypto industry, the current ‘metaverse’ remains a centralized and isolated experience. Therefore, as announced in a press release on Tuesday, top gaming and software developers have started the Metaverse Standards Forum with a mission to drive interoperability and cross-compatibility in the space along with standardized terminology

The press release stated:

“Industry leaders have stated that the potential of the metaverse will be best realized if it is built on a foundation of open standards”

The forum will collaborate on pragmatic, action-based projects and open-source tooling to speed up the adoption of metaverse standards, simultaneously developing consistent terminology and deployment guidelines.

An important motivation of the forum is to ensure that there is not one company that will dominate the development of the metaverse, mirrored to the development of the world wide web (internet) was led a group of stakeholders.

The forum’s first meeting is planned for July but will not include Apple, Niantic who both chose not to get involved.

Vishal Shah, vice president of Metaverse at Meta, said:

“Building a metaverse for everyone will require an industry-wide focus on common standards. The Metaverse Standards Forum can drive the collaboration that’s needed to make this possible, and Meta is committed to this work. Creators, developers and companies will all benefit from the technologies and experiences that will be made possible by common protocols.”
