A recent study delves into the personality traits of cryptocurrency investors, revealing that they may be more inclined to exhibit psychopathic tendencies. Conducted by researchers from the University of Toronto and the University of Miami, the study surveyed 2,001 American adults to better understand the psychological profiles of those involved in digital assets, as reported by Bloomberg.
According to the study, approximately 30% of respondents disclosed that they currently own or have previously owned cryptocurrencies. The findings suggest that these investors often score higher on personality traits associated with psychopathy, narcissism, Machiavellianism, and sadism—traits collectively known as the “dark” personality spectrum. Additionally, these individuals are more likely to exhibit behaviors such as paranoia, a need for chaos, and a victimhood mentality.
The study also found that crypto owners tend to have higher levels of psychological reactance, which is the tendency to react negatively when their freedoms feel restricted or threatened. This behavior may help explain why some individuals are drawn to the decentralized and often unregulated world of cryptocurrencies.
The researchers pointed out that crypto investors are more prone to believe in conspiracy theories, support extremist groups, and hold populist views. They noted that specific characteristics can often predict whether a person is likely to be a crypto investor, such as being male, having a victim mindset, and consuming news from non-mainstream media outlets.
While the study provides intriguing insights, it also acknowledges its limitations, including a relatively small sample size and the fact that respondents self-reported their personality traits. The report did not specify whether standardized psychological tests were employed to assess the profiles of the participants.
