Taking a groundbreaking stride into digital currency acceptance, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the U.S. Presidential candidate, made an announcement that his campaign would pioneer in accepting Bitcoin (BTC) donations. This move marks a first in the annals of American politics.
Last month, Kennedy declared his intent to run for the presidential office in 2024 as a Democratic candidate. He further elucidated on his Bitcoin-friendly campaign during his appearance at the Bitcoin 2023 Conference in Miami.
“Our campaign is not just embracing Bitcoin donations via the Lightning Network, but it’s also a step towards the future. Today, we’re exhibiting to the world the robustness, adaptability, and strength of Bitcoin,” stated Kennedy.
As an environmental lawyer, Kennedy believes Bitcoin can provide a potent defense against authoritative censorship. He further pledged to uphold the right to use Bitcoin if his presidential bid is successful.
Kennedy emphasized, “If I become president, I will ensure your right to possess and utilize Bitcoin remains unassailable. The first thing I’ll do is to safeguard the right to self-custody of Bitcoin and other digital assets. Ownership of your private keys should be as straightforward as having the keys to your car or your wallet.”
He expressed his firm belief that individuals should have complete control over their wallets, be they physical or digital, without the government demanding access to their Bitcoin keys or any of their passwords. Kennedy added, “Arguing otherwise means conceding vital ground to the surveillance state.” His visionary approach blends traditional politics with the evolving digital world, creating a promising future for cryptocurrencies in political campaigns.
