Blockchain payments company Ripple is advancing its ecosystem by introducing smart contracts to the XRP Ledger mainnet. This move is set to significantly enhance the platform’s programmability, offering developers the tools to create custom applications.
Ripple’s announcement on September 2 outlined plans to integrate smart contract functionality into the XRP Ledger. The introduction of smart contracts aims to broaden the layer-1 capabilities of the platform, which has primarily been used for cross-border payments by financial institutions since its launch in 2012. Ripple seeks to attract more developers to the XRP ecosystem by offering increased flexibility and the ability to build innovative decentralized applications (dApps).
Smart contracts are essentially self-executing agreements, where the terms are encoded into the contract itself. On the XRP Ledger, these contracts will allow developers to creatively leverage core features such as escrows, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), trust lines, payment channels, and decentralized exchange capabilities. This new functionality builds on existing standards like Hooks, which are already integrated into the XRP Ledger.
A key aspect of Ripple’s plan is the ease with which developers can deploy smart contracts on the XRP Ledger. Unlike other platforms that may require a formal amendment process or specific approvals, developers on the XRP Ledger will be able to implement smart contracts directly. To ensure these contracts are secure, efficient, and simple to deploy, Ripple will introduce an XLS standard, providing a structured approach to smart contract deployment.
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse emphasized the significance of this development, noting that “the programmability of the XRP Ledger is something the XRP community has rightly been asking for.” The integration of smart contracts is expected to open new avenues for innovation within the XRP ecosystem, aligning with the broader goal of making the XRP Ledger a versatile and developer-friendly platform.
