Riksbank Raises Red Flag for Secure Offline Payments

Share

To guarantee the security of offline payments made with e-kronas, Sweden’s Riksbank underlined in a recent study how important it is to have strong technological and legislative frameworks.

The central bank of Sweden emphasized in its most recent study on CBDCs the dangers of using out-of-synchronized data in offline transactions. In order to reduce liquidity concerns brought on by shadow wallets and intermediate nodes, it was emphasized how important it is to match offline transactions with online balances.

When many users participate in consecutive offline transactions without synchronization, an inherent danger arises. For instance, when people add CBDCs to their offline wallets and then spend them offline, there will be differences in the balances of their offline and online accounts. This would lower the amount of money available to receivers.

Tackling Security Gaps

The central bank clarified the difficulties that receivers had while trying to sync their wallets following the receipt of CBDCs from offline transactions. This security flaw highlights the need of sender synchronization to guarantee recipients’ access to cash.

The central bank of Sweden is looking on ways to solve these problems, such creating payment liquidity pools or putting limits on offline CBDC use. For example, after synchronization takes place, CBDCs that were received offline could not be available for transactions. But the Riksbank has to do more research before deciding if these options are feasible.

The central bank has not decided which technology to use or whether to issue a digital currency, even though its e-krona solution trial program has come to an end. Riksbank is still dedicated to promoting safe and effective payment systems in the future, even as talks go on.
