Netflix is facing legal trouble over the documentary Biggest Heist Ever, which covers the infamous Bitfinex Bitcoin hack. Heather Morgan, also known as “Razzlekhan,” and her lawyers are accusing the streaming service of defamation and invasion of privacy.
Morgan, a rapper and influencer, was convicted alongside her husband, Ilya Lichtenstein, for laundering stolen Bitcoin. She is set to begin an 18-month prison sentence on February 4. However, she is now suing Netflix, arguing that the documentary spreads false and damaging claims about her.
Her lawyers have sent an official warning to Netflix and the production company, Library Films, demanding that footage of wedding guests be removed. They have also threatened further legal action if Netflix does not comply.
The documentary suggests that Morgan and Lichtenstein bought stolen passports and other identity documents on the dark web. Morgan’s lawyers deny this, saying Netflix is wrongly portraying her as the mastermind behind the hack.
They argue that the filmmakers failed to do proper research and claim that official court documents clear Morgan of direct involvement in the theft.
Other individuals may also have been falsely implicated. For example, the documentary allegedly identifies Morgan’s father-in-law as a hacker, which her lawyers insist is untrue.
The case revolves around the 2016 hack of the cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex, where around 120,000 Bitcoin was stolen. Lichtenstein was ultimately found guilty of carrying out the hack and was sentenced to five years in prison. Morgan was convicted for her role in laundering the stolen funds.
Netflix has not yet responded to the allegations, leaving it unclear whether the documentary will be edited or removed.
