Mississippi Senate’s Gaming Bill Faces Backlash from SPGA

The Mississippi Senate recently passed SB 2510, a bill that broadens the state’s prohibition on gaming to include online, interactive, and computerized versions of casino-style games. In response, the Social and Promotional Games Association (SPGA) voiced strong opposition, arguing the legislation misrepresents legal sweepstakes gaming and stifles consumer choice.

“The SPGA is deeply disappointed by the Mississippi Senate’s decision to advance SB 2510, which unjustly targets sweepstakes and conflates a safe and legal form of entertainment with illegal operations,” the Association said.

SPGA emphasized that social sweepstakes differ from traditional gambling. “Social sweepstakes are free-to-play games that never require a purchase for a player to win a game. They’re part of a long-established industry of social casino games enjoyed by tens of millions of adults across America.”

Concerns Over Consumer Freedom and Industry Impact

Beyond regulatory concerns, SPGA questioned whether Mississippi voters support lawmakers limiting their access to online entertainment. The Association criticized the bill as a move to protect casino interests rather than consumer rights.

“Voters deserve better than lawmakers who prioritize the protection of a slot machine maker over individual freedom,” SPGA stated. “Rather than enacting punitive measures that reduce innovation and consumer choice, we urge lawmakers to consider a regulatory approach that enshrines transparency and consumer protections while allowing Mississippi adults to continue enjoying the fun, fair, and free-to-play games offered by social sweepstakes operators.”

This controversy follows a broader national conversation about sweepstakes gaming. SPGA recently spoke with Gaming America regarding a potential sweepstakes market in New Jersey after Assemblyman Clinton Calabrese introduced a bill on January 16. His proposal seeks to regulate sweepstakes casinos under the state’s existing iGaming framework, subjecting them to licensing, oversight, and taxation.
