Microsoft’s Edge Browser to Integrate Ethereum Wallet: What We Know So Far

Share

Tech giant Microsoft is reportedly working on integrating a new feature into its default web browser that will enable users to send and receive cryptocurrency assets. According to BleepingComputer, software documenter Albacore shared screenshots of a new Ethereum wallet that Microsoft is planning to incorporate into its Edge browser. The screenshots reveal that Microsoft is developing a non-custodial crypto wallet that will give users exclusive control of their assets and private keys. Microsoft’s onboarding pages also indicate support for browsing NFT marketplaces, a news feed feature, and an option for users to choose between the built-in Edge wallet or an extension wallet for managing their assets.

Non-Custodial Wallet for Complete Control

According to the shared images, Microsoft’s upcoming Edge wallet is a non-custodial wallet, which means that users will have complete control over their funds. This will also prevent Microsoft from having access to users’ passwords and recovery keys. The wallet is embedded in Edge, making it easy to use without installing any extension.

Limited Details Released by Microsoft

A Microsoft spokesperson commented on the upcoming feature, saying that the company regularly tests new features to explore new experiences for its customers. However, they did not reveal any further information about the integration of the Ethereum wallet into Edge or when it will be released.

Mixed Reactions from the Community

The news of Microsoft’s integration of a crypto wallet into its browser has received mixed reactions from the community. Albacore, the software documenter who shared the screenshots, expressed some reservations about the new feature, stating, “Not really sure how to feel about this kind of thing being baked into the default browser.” Some experts have also raised concerns about the security and usability of the upcoming wallet.

Microsoft’s development of a crypto wallet for its Edge browser marks another significant milestone in the adoption of cryptocurrency by mainstream companies. While details about the integration of the wallet into Edge are limited, the move by Microsoft could provide easier access and use of cryptocurrencies for a wider audience. However, as with any new feature, it will be essential to consider the security and privacy implications of using the wallet before integrating it into everyday use.
