How a Facebook Job Ad Led to a Crypto Scam Nightmare

Share

After responding to a seemingly promising job ad on Facebook, a Malaysian man named John found himself trapped in a terrifying human trafficking and crypto scam operation in Cambodia. His experience tells us to be particularly aware of the risks lurking on social media job boards.

As reported by CBC, John’s ordeal began when he was offered a customer service position at a Cambodian casino during the Covid-19 pandemic. Lured with the promise of an all-expenses-paid relocation from Thailand to Sihanoukville, he soon discovered the grim reality of his situation. Upon arrival, his passport was confiscated, and he was locked up in a compound, forced into participating in a crypto scam targeting English-speaking Westerners. This scam, known as pig-butchering, involves scammers building trust with victims before convincing them to invest in fraudulent crypto assets.

“We [were] always on the fourth floor to eat, to work, to sleep, to take a shower. Once you get into the scam compound, that might be your life – gone,” John revealed, highlighting the relentless control the traffickers had over their captives. He was expected to entice 15 new target victims per day, a task enforced under the threat of physical violence. “The traffickers beat or electric-shocked them when they did not follow the rules,” John said, exposing the brutal measures used to ensure compliance.

In his quest for freedom, John’s first attempt to escape through an online messaging app was thwarted, leading to him being sold to another scam company for $11,000. His resilience shone through as he reached out for help again, this time contacting the International Justice Mission (IJM) through a fake social media account. Jake Sims, IJM’s country director for Cambodia, played a crucial role in coordinating with authorities to rescue him.

Sims explained, “Your typical profile is someone who probably speaks a couple of languages, is college-educated, probably is quite savvy with technology, with social media. They’re out of work, they’re seeking quite high-risk employment opportunities, so they are desperate.” This profile fits John perfectly, illustrating how traffickers prey on the vulnerable and desperate.

Pig butchering schemes are becoming increasingly troublesome these days, as governments warn about them. Three months ago, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) seized approximately $9 million in tether (USDT) in a raid, where it uncovered a network of cryptocurrency fraud believed to be linked to these schemes.
