The Human Rights Foundation Celebrates Hal Finney with Freedom Prize Award

The Human Rights Foundation recently inaugurated the Finney Freedom Prize to honor individuals making significant contributions to the development of Bitcoin. The award is named after Hal Finney, a pioneering computer scientist and privacy advocate instrumental in the early days of Bitcoin. Sadly, Finney passed away in 2014 from ALS, but his legacy continues to impact the Bitcoin community profoundly.

This year, the award was posthumously granted to Finney himself. His widow, Fran Finney, accepted the prize on his behalf and expressed her intentions to donate the 1 bitcoin prize to charity. During her acceptance speech, she highlighted Hal’s early optimism about Bitcoin’s potential. “Hal would have been thrilled to see how this Bitcoin ecosystem has grown, and to learn that this once-obscure software project is now used by tens of millions of people worldwide,” Fran Finney remarked. She added, “He would be honored to be the first recipient of this award, and humbled to have it be in his name. I feel great privilege and responsibility in accepting the first prize on his behalf.”

The prize will be awarded annually on January 10, celebrated as “Running Bitcoin Day” to commemorate the day Hal Finney tweeted about being the first person, aside from the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto, to run the Bitcoin software. He made history with his tweet “Running bitcoin” on Jan. 11, 2009. In the future, awards will align with the Bitcoin halving events, which occur approximately every four years.

A “Genesis Committee” consisting of notable figures such as Aaron van Wirdum, Farida Nabourema, Gloria Zhao, Lisa Neigut, Obi Nwosu, Ross Stevens, and Vitus Zeller has been formed to oversee the nomination process through 2028. These members will also nominate their successors who will serve four-year terms.

Hal Finney was among the first to engage with Bitcoin, responding enthusiastically to Satoshi Nakamoto’s initial announcement and playing a crucial role in the cryptocurrency’s development. He was the recipient of the first bitcoin transaction, and contributed significantly to the project’s code. His enthusiasm and contributions have led some to speculate about his deeper involvement with Bitcoin, with theories suggesting he might have been Satoshi Nakamoto or part of a group under that name.

In one of his early emails to Nakamoto, he foresaw Bitcoin potentially reaching extraordinary values, a prediction that certainly proved accurate, looking back on this day.
