Federal Reserve Governor Expresses Concerns About US Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)

Share

Michelle Bowman, governor of the Federal Reserve Bank, recently gave a speech at Harvard in which she questioned whether a central bank digital currency (CBDC) would be advantageous for the United States. Her remarks imply that there are other approaches that may deal with the same problems as a digital dollar.

Bowman stressed that it is still unknown what a US CBDC would be used for. She thinks that although a CBDC is suggested as a solution to particular issues, there could be other and more efficient options available. She claims that even while the potential advantages of a US CBDC are still unclear, its implementation might pose serious dangers and trade-offs for the financial sector.

Risks and Trade-Offs

The introduction of a CBDC may have unforeseen effects for the US financial sector and generate serious privacy concerns for consumers, according to one of the primary issues Bowman brought up. Stablecoins, which are cryptocurrency assets tethered to the dollar, were also highlighted in relation to their dangers and trade-offs. Bowman said that while these have been proposed as alternatives to CBDCs, they are less regulated and have previously shown volatility.

Bowman emphasized the need to proceed cautiously while dealing with both CBDCs and stablecoins. Stablecoins, she recognized, have become a viable alternative to traditional payment methods and a store of value, but their track record in terms of security, stability, and regulation has given rise to certain worries.

Bowman advocated for innovation that helps customers responsibly, but he advised against approaches that would undermine and disintermediate the financial sector. Her main priority is to minimize threats to financial stability and any harm to customers.
