Deutsche Telekom to Mine Bitcoin After Running Nodes

Share

At the BTC Prague conference, Deutsche Telekom’s subsidiary T-Systems MMS announced it is running both a Bitcoin node and a Lightning Network node. The company also plans to start mining Bitcoin.

Dirk Röder, Web3 lead at T-Systems MMS, disclosed that the firm has been operating these nodes since 2023. He emphasized that T-Systems MMS has supported the Bitcoin network for over a year. As Europe’s largest telecommunications provider, Deutsche Telekom and its subsidiaries are not new to blockchain technology. They have previously backed Polygon, Ethereum, and other blockchain networks.

Röder explained, “We provide our cloud infrastructure for blockchain networks such as Ethereum or Polkadot. These nodes record transactions and secure the blockchain as ‘guardians.’” He described the company as an enabler for the blockchain infrastructure, stating, “For this service, we get paid in cryptocurrencies. At the same time, we give Web3 the necessary security for future applications.”

When asked about the company’s future plans, Röder confirmed they intend to start mining Bitcoin. This expansion beyond node operation aims to strengthen the blockchain industry and the infrastructure of Web3.
