Deleted Files Could Hold Clues in Argentina Libra Probe

Share

Authorities investigating the Libra crypto case in Argentina are looking deeper into a device seized from cryptocurrency trader Mauricio Novelli. Reports now suggest that before the drive was confiscated, Novelli deleted a number of files, which may be tied to claims about a hidden promotional video featuring President Javier Milei.

Good to know

  • Dozens of files were reportedly erased from Novelli’s device before it was seized.
  • A tech report suggests deleted data may be recoverable through forensic tools.
  • $57 million in funds tied to Libra wallets have already been frozen by Circle.

Local media in Argentina reported that Novelli’s drive had multiple folders and files removed prior to being handed over. Some were named after movies and TV shows, but cybersecurity experts believe those names could be disguises for more sensitive material.

A technical report submitted to prosecutors by the Chief of the Technical Analysis Laboratory of Information Technology of the Public Ministry said that if the deleted content is considered important, “a carving process should be run on this forensic image, in order to try to recover deleted folders and files.”

Unreleased Video at the Center of Speculation

An unnamed source familiar with the case suggested the deleted files may include a video described by Hayden Davis of Kelsier Ventures. Davis had previously told media outlets that a video existed showing Argentine President Javier Milei endorsing the Libra project. The video, according to Davis, was never made public.

That same source reportedly said, “If it’s what Davis says, where is that video? Who has it? Could it be one of those deleted files? We don’t know, but it needs to be verified.”

Although the Anti-Corruption Office cleared Milei of any ethics violations related to Libra, the broader investigation is still underway in both Argentina and the United States. Authorities are looking at communication records and asset trails connected to the launch of the controversial token.

Millions Already Frozen in Connection to Libra

In a separate move last month, Circle froze nearly $57 million connected to Libra-linked wallets, following a request from Argentine investigators. The action reflects growing pressure on firms and individuals tied to the project as authorities continue tracing financial activity linked to its development.
