Bitfarms Strikes 100 MW Hydropower Deal to Boost Paraguay Facility

Share

In a strategic move aimed at bolstering its mining capabilities, Bitfarms, a prominent bitcoin mining company listed on Nasdaq and Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX), has announced the acquisition of an extra 100 MW of power from Paraguay’s state-owned utility firm, ANDE. This development is expected to significantly enhance the capacity of Bitfarms’ hydro-powered Yguazu site, positioning the company for substantial growth in the bitcoin mining sector.

Expansion Plans Underway for Yguazu Facility

The additional 100 MW of capacity will effectively double the capacity of Bitfarms’ Yguazu facility, which relies on hydroelectric power generation. With a focus on operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness, hydropower is projected to deliver electricity at an attractive rate of $0.039 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), safeguarding Bitfarms against inflationary pressures. Construction activities at the Yguazu site commenced in March, including the crucial high-voltage interconnection to the ANDE substation.

Ben Gagnon, Bitfarms’ chief mining officer, expressed optimism about the expansion, highlighting its alignment with the company’s growth targets. Gagnon emphasized the importance of leveraging the existing construction plan to optimize infrastructure development and drive down overall costs per megawatt. Damian Polla, Bitfarms’ General Manager of LATAM, underscored the significance of Paraguay as a key growth frontier, citing the substantial infrastructure expansion opportunities represented by the Paso Pe and Yguazu farms.

Bitfarms’ stock performance has been under scrutiny, experiencing a recent decline of 16.7% over the past five days. However, the company’s long-term trajectory remains positive, with a notable 37% increase in stock value over the past six months.
