Users in Costa Rica will soon be able to purchase and trade Bitcoin (BTC) with the colón, the nation’s official currency, thanks to a Bitcoin circular economy project called the Bitcoin Jungle. The National System for Electronic Payments, or SINPE Movil in Spanish, is managed by the Central Bank of Costa Rica and is similar to the well-known M-Pesa system in Kenya. Users of this payment network may instantly send and receive money using mobile phone numbers.
Over 60% of the population is said to use this service, which at one point contributed an amazing 17% of Costa Rica’s GDP through its transactions, according to local media reports. SINPE Movil operates as an interbank settlement service, similar to Zelle in the US or Interac in Canada, as opposed to a specialized app.
In order to highlight the significance of SINPE Movil integration, Bull Bitcoin founder and CEO Francis Pouliot said that “everyone in Costa Rica uses it.” He emphasized how easy the service was to use and how quickly transactions were completed, calling it a “almost magical experience.” Pouliot highlighted the ease with which money could be sent “from anywhere in the world to a Costa Rican’s phone number within seconds, at very low cost.”
Pouliot, a Canadian citizen who lives in Costa Rica, claims that SINPE Movil has significantly increased banking accessibility in the nation.
