In a tweet last night, British ambient musician Richard David James best known by the name Aphex Twin, announced the release of an NFT on NFT platform Foundation.
The NFT is called ‘/afx/weirdcore<blockscanner>’ and represents a futuristic animation of his (smiling)face. Current bid at the time of writing is over $100,000 (52.77ETH) and the bid will end at 9pm ET today.
As shared on twitter, some of the proceeds will allocated for a good cause. “We will spend a portion of the money on planting trees and either donating to permaculture projects or setting them up ourselves, depending on how much we get,” the tweet said.
Aphex Twin is known for his single releases ‘On’ and ‘Come to Daddy’ while his release of ‘Windowlicker’ in 1999 also got the mainstream to notice him with a quite unusual music video. In 2001 he was heralded by Guardian journalist Paul Lester as “the most inventive and influential figure in contemporary electronic music”.
This latest NFT release is yet another confirmation of a booming trend in NFT releases and auctions. The $69million auction of Beeple’s “The First 5,000 days”, received extensive attention in all (mainstream) media across the globe.
