NFL Turns Attention to Indianapolis Colts Player in Gambling Investigation

Share

In an effort to maintain the integrity of the game, the NFL is currently probing into an Indianapolis Colts player suspected of breaching the league’s stern gambling policy. In a response released on Monday, the team confirmed their awareness of the ongoing investigation, but chose to remain tight-lipped about the specifics at this point.

ESPN has been able to garner insider information from multiple sources which indicate that the player facing these serious allegations is Isaiah Rodgers, a cornerback and kick returner for the Colts. Rodgers, who was a sixth-round pick, is now entering the final year of his $3.4 million contract, spanning four years.

Betting Allegations

It has come to light that the sportsbook account involved was registered under the name of a Rodgers’ associate. From what is understood, the account witnessed roughly 100 bets, including wagers on Colts games. While the majority of these bets stayed within the modest range of $25-$50, at least one of them reached the low four figures.

ESPN reached out to Rodgers and his agent for a response, but calls went unanswered. The Colts also refrained from elaborating further than their initial statement.

Rodgers, who started nine games in 2022, was on track to start again this season. This trajectory followed the trade of Stephon Gilmore to the Dallas Cowboys. With Julius Brents, a second-round rookie cornerback anticipated to back up Rodgers, this investigation throws a wrench in the works.

SportsHandle.com Report

This revelation follows a recent report by SportsHandle.com, highlighting a Colts player’s significant gambling activities, including bets placed on his own team. While this player’s identity was kept under wraps in the report, the latest developments have filled in some blanks. When ESPN sought further clarification, an NFL spokesperson chose to refrain from commenting, adding that they had “nothing to add.”

Jenny Reske, the Deputy Director at the Indiana Gaming Commission, confirmed that the Commission is informed of the situation. While they are not leading the investigation, they continue to monitor the progression. Reske made it clear that the IGC will evaluate the necessary regulatory actions as more information surfaces.

Past Incidents

This current investigation rekindles memories of past incidents where players faced stern consequences for similar violations. Last April saw five players, including four from the Detroit Lions, suspended due to such infringements. Likewise, the previous year had Calvin Ridley, then a player for the Atlanta Falcons, suspended for an entire season for placing bets on NFL games.

While the NFL has fostered strong relationships with sportsbooks, it remains strict about prohibiting players from wagering on NFL games. These restrictions also extend to betting within NFL facilities. As investigations continue, the league is intent on upholding its policy, ensuring fair play in the sport loved by many.
