The National Football League (NFL) seems to be constantly vigilant for signs of improper gambling activity, following several suspensions last month. The league is allegedly investigating additional potential breaches of its gambling policy, according to a recent report by ESPN.
In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to authorize sports betting a few years ago, the NFL has remained proactive in preserving the integrity of the sport. Partnering with sportsbooks and integrity firms, they have established a system to scrutinize betting patterns and pinpoint suspicious activities.
David Highhill, who supervises sports betting activities for the NFL, confirmed their efforts to ESPN, saying, “We have long focused on expanding our monitoring efforts… Our monitoring efforts include internal measures, along with resources and services provided by our partners.”
April witnessed the NFL impose strict disciplinary actions on several players who violated its gambling policy. Three players—Quintez Cephus, C.J. Moore, and Shaka Toney—were handed indefinite suspensions for betting on NFL games during the 2022 season, as per the NFL’s announcement. Stanley Berryhill and Jameson Williams each received six-game suspensions.
Meanwhile, Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Calvin Ridley made a triumphant return to the NFL after serving a year-long suspension for gambling on NFL games during his time with the Atlanta Falcons. Ridley, a Pro Bowler, was caught betting on NFL games over a five-day period in November 2021 while he was on the non-football illness list.
It remains unclear who the latest investigations are targeting, and the league has not yet released any further details. Nonetheless, the NFL’s continuous efforts in this domain underscore their commitment to maintaining the sport’s integrity.
