According to the Maryland Lottery and Gaming, the total handle for the sports betting industry in Maryland increased by 7.5% year over year to $475.7 million in February 2025. An important factor in this gain was online betting, which contributed $463.2 million, an 8.1% increase over the same time last year.
In contrast, retail sports betting generated $12.5 million in handling, a decrease of 11.3% year over year. The total amount wagered remained robust despite this decline, with Maryland bettors taking home $415.7 million in profits. In comparison to the 9.8% rate in February 2024, when players won $399.1 million, the operator hold rate was 12.6%.
With Maryland imposing a 15% sports wagering tax, operators contributed nearly $6.4 million to the state’s Future Fund and Problem Gambling Fund in February 2025. Since sports betting became legal in December 2021, total contributions have exceeded $149.6 million for the Future Fund and $3.7 million for problem gambling programs.
Maryland had 11 mobile betting platforms and 13 retail sportsbooks operating during February 2025. However, The Greene Turtle/betParx retail sportsbook in Towson shut down on February 9, leaving 12 active retail locations.
Maryland Lottery and Gaming also reported that sports betting had generated $61.2 million in contributions over the first eight months of fiscal year 2025. This figure already surpasses the total of $60.3 million recorded for all of fiscal year 2024. Notably, the $6.4 million contributed in February 2025 marked a 50.8% year-over-year increase, with nearly $6.3 million coming from online wagering.
