Malik Beasley’s NBA future is in limbo after reports surfaced linking him to a federal investigation into suspicious sports betting activity. At the same time, court records show the free agent guard is dealing with over $8 million in personal debt.
Good to know
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Beasley became the subject of an investigation after at least one sportsbook flagged suspicious betting patterns related to his prop bets. Beasley played last season with the Detroit Pistons and was expected to sign a three-year, $42 million extension before the offer was reportedly withdrawn.
In a statement, Beasley’s lawyer Steve Haney said:
“An investigation is not a charge. Malik is afforded the same right of the presumption of innocence as anyone else under the US Constitution. As of now, he has not been charged with anything.”
While the betting investigation makes headlines, Beasley’s financial situation tells another story. Court records obtained by The Detroit News reveal a long list of legal troubles over unpaid debts. Beasley owes thousands to a Milwaukee barber, a Minnesota dentist, a Detroit landlord, and two lending firms.
One of the biggest lawsuits came from Hazan Sports Management Group, Beasley’s former marketing agency. In April, they filed a claim for $2.25 million, saying he failed to repay a $650,000 advance. “Hazan Sports elected to take a chance and make a substantial investment of time, effort, and resources in a player with known issues (including and especially financial issues),” the lawsuit stated.
Back in 2022, South River Capital won a $5.8 million judgment after Beasley defaulted on a loan. Then in August 2024, Beasley signed a new deal with Aliya Capital Partners, offering up his future NBA earnings in return for immediate funds.
The barber won a $26,827 judgment. A dentist won a separate $34,390 case. Beasley also faced two separate lawsuits over unpaid rent at The Stott, a luxury building in Detroit. One case was dismissed. The other is still active, with a court hearing scheduled for July 15.
According to Spotrac, Beasley has earned around $60 million in total over his nine-year NBA career. But with legal issues piling up and his future uncertain, the road ahead looks rough — both on and off the court.
