The Main Super Bowl 56 Favorites: Chiefs & Bucs Lead The Way

Share

Super Bowl 56 will be played at SoFi Stadium — home of the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams — in Inglewood, California.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won last year’s big game by defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 at Raymond James Stadium. The Bucs became the first team to play in a Super Bowl on their own home field.

Tom Brady and company made the most of home field advantage. Now, the Bucs will look to become the first to repeat as Super Bowl champions since the 2004 New England Patriots. That team, of course, was led by Brady.

But unlike the previous two seasons, the defending champions are not the main favorites to win the Lombardi Trophy. Rather, Super Bowl Betting Sites list Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs as the main favorites to win Super Bowl 56.

Kansas City Chiefs (+500)

For the second consecutive year, the Chiefs have the best Super Bowl odds, and understandably so.

The team’s ultimate weakness, the offensive line, was badly exposed by Tampa’s resilient front seven in the Super Bowl. GM Brett Veach invested valuable money and draft capital to repair the unit for Mahomes.

He acquired star offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr. in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens. Stalwart veteran guard Joe Thuney was signed in free agency on a five-year, $80 million deal. Kyle Long was brought out of retirement to further bolster the o-line.

Oklahoma center Creed Humphrey (63rd overall) and Tennessee guard Trey Smith (226th overall) were added in the draft.

Mahomes wasn’t sacked once in 29 pass attempts during preseason play. If this o-line is the real deal, the Chiefs’ offensive juggernaut will be tougher to stop than ever before.

And let’s not sleep on Steve Spagnuolo’s group that finished seventh and 10th in scoring defense in 2019 and 2020, respectively. This ball-hawking group can take over the game at any point.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+600)

Despite facing a difficult cap situation, the Buccaneers managed to bring back all 22 starters from their Super Bowl 55 championship team.

The 44-year-old Brady hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down. If anything else, he could be even better in 2021 after taking a while to get the full grasp of the Bruce Arians and Byron Leftwich-coached offense.

Brady has more weapons at his disposal than any other quarterback. And of course, the Bucs have an opportunistic, physical and game-wrecking defense led by the linebacker duo of Lavonte David and Devin Bush.

The main thing against the Bucs is history. Dating back to the 2005 season, only three teams have reached consecutive Super Bowls: The 2013 and 2014 Seattle Seahawks, the 2016-2018 Patriots and the 2019 and 2020 Chiefs.

And there figures to be more competition in the NFC, with the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams, Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers making significant moves to upgrade their respective rosters.

Buffalo Bills (+1000)

The Bills are coming off their most successful season in nearly three decades. Josh Allen put together an MVP-caliber season (4,544 passing yards, 37 touchdowns against just 10 picks) and led Buffalo to 13 wins and its first division title since 1995.

Buffalo advanced to the AFC Championship Game, where they fell to the Chiefs at Arrowhead 38-24.

If the offense retains its potent status, and if Leslie Frazier’s defense can bounce back following an up-and-down year, Buffalo can absolutely take down Kansas City in the AFC. And they can claim the franchise’s first ever Super Bowl.

Green Bay Packers (+1300)

The Packers have gone 26-6 under head coach Matt LaFleur. But they’ve also endured two brutal NFC Championship Game losses, and when Aaron Rodgers is your quarterback, it’s Super Bowl-or-bust every year.

The Packers drafted Amari Rodgers out of Clemson and brought back old friend Randall Cobb (via trade with the Houston Texans) to further bolster Rodgers’ supporting cast. We know what this team is capable of.

Now, it’s about avoiding costly defensive meltdowns that always seem to arrive in the postseason.

This could very well be Green Bay’s last chance to win with Rodgers.

Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Ravens & San Francisco 49ers (+1400)

These three teams currently share the fifth-best Super Bowl odds.

The Rams have endured four straight winning seasons under Sean McVay. They went 10-6 last year and advanced to the Divisional Round, falling to Rodgers and the Packers at Lambeau Field.

The big move was swapping out Jared Goff and draft picks for longtime Detroit Lions star Matthew Stafford. The latter is a prime fit in Sean McVay’s offense that features no legitimate weaknesses.

The Rams, who fielded the NFL’s best defense a year ago, have two Hall of Fame-caliber players in Jalen Ramsey and Aaron Donald. They should be viewed as the Bucs’ biggest challengers in the NFC.

The Ravens have gone 30-7 with Lamar Jackson as the starter. They’ve fielded the NFL’s best rushing offense in each of the last two years. Also, the defense has finished no worse than third in scoring under Don Martindale, who enters his fourth season as defensive coordinator.

If the Ravens can get their new-look passing game going, they’ll be an ultra-tough out come playoff time.

The 49ers were hit hard by injuries last season. Naturally, better luck will make them better than the six-win team we saw a year ago.

Jimmy Garoppolo got this team to within one throw of a Super Bowl two years ago, so don’t discount his ability to take San Fran back to the promised land. If Garoppolo isn’t the answer, Kyle Shanahan can roll with prized do-it-all rookie Trey Lance, who slowed plenty of promise in preseason.

With no serious weaknesses on the roster, the 49ers will heavily contend for the NFC throne and the Super Bowl.
